Spring news 2009

The autumn weather has been very good for the winter green species and the current cold spell is very good for the cypripedium in particular. Most have produced very good growth, even the smallest of the tubers. In particular the Ophrys hybrids, sphegodes, orchis morio and Orchis morio x papilionacea are all looking very good. I also have some large orchis militaris. I have small numbers of a few species which can be reserved for delivery to any of the spring shows.

Most of the cypripediums have arrived now and have been planted in a new mix in which the perlite and Seramis has been replaced by pumice. I also obtained some pine duff which I have added to the mix for the American species. I was lucky to obtain some excellent hybrids from Peter Corkhill which have been listed. I will be taking bags of this compost to sell at various events. I will have a range of young hybrid seedlings available in the spring. This spring I am going to have to refrigerate some of my cypripediums in order to hold them back for the NEC Gardeners World Show.

The range of Japanese orchids I will have available in late February can be viewed on the internet on the Shikoku Garden site. I only have a small number of some of the species arriving so anyone who is interested in purchasing any should reserve them quickly.

I am now exchanging species with some amateur enthusiasts in Europe who have mastered the art of growing from seed. On that subject; a number of growers are currently germinating seed of various species for me. Hopefully, I will have a large number of young plants available in 2010.

You can see from the first part of my events list that I have a very full spring programme around the country. I am happy to take plants to specific events. If you are not already a member of an orchid society why not visit one of the numerous shows this year. I will be attending the 50th Anniversary show of the Bournemouth Society in February and will be returning to both the Harrogate and Cheltenham events. One highlight of the late spring will be my first visit to Dublin to give a talk to the Irish Orchid Society on cypripediums. I still have room in the calendar to add other talks or shows; especially in the latter half of the year.

I am also attending a number of Orchid Weekends at various garden centres around the north and Midlands along with tropical orchid nurseries and local societies. We will be giving talks on each day and have a wide range of plants for sale. We are looking for additional venues to hold events next autumn.

I have been involved with a number of orchid meadow projects this year including one at the National Wildflower Centre near Liverpool where a range of native orchids have been added to their wildflower displays. I have also provided native species for a new wildflower meadow at Kew Gardens. The mass plantings should look quite superb during the flowering season.

I hope that 2009 will be a good growing year for everybody’s garden orchids and there are plenty of flowers this year.

anacamptis morio x papilionacea

Summer Dormant Tuber List

cephalanthera falcata
anacamptis morio x papilionacea They have been priced according to tuber size rather than years out of flask (except seedlings/young plants) because of the variation in growth within a specie batch. The largest size flowered this year and the large either flowered this year or should flower next spring for the first time. The seedlings were de-flasked recently and the young plants in the autumn. cephalanthera falcata

All plants are seed grown from reputable growers in Europe. Additional species may become available later. No price indicates the species are currently out of stock.
