for a friendly print out of this price list click here Laneside Alpine & Hardy Orchids - Spring News 2008 The autumn weather has certainly helped the winter green orchids. Growth has been very good which should ensure good flower spikes in the spring. Never throw out tubers which have lost their leaf rosettes early. I put an anacamptis laxiflora into my rockery in March when it appeared to have died without producing a new tuber. I was surprised when it produced a very good new shoot in September. The same applies to cypripediums. I have several in my garden which lost top growth and new buds in the summer of 2006 but have come back with several small growths this year. Whilst many terrestrial orchid growers in the UK prefer pure bred species, especially wintergreen species, I am of the opinion that hybrids are worth buying instead as they usually exhibit hybrid vigour and often produce flowers looking like one of the parents. I have a range of flowering sized ophrys and anacamptis hybrids available this year. It is now too late to purchase by mail order as they would suffer in transport. The famous Frosch hybrid cypripediums are very good again this year but unfortunately there are only a few flowering size plants still available. Please telephone to find out current availability. The new Aki Pastel produces good sized rhizomes which should flower in 2009. Many of the one year from flowering size are very good and may indeed flower. Cypripediums are increasing in popularity but availability of flowering sized plants of some of the rarer species are not and it would appear that there are quantities of plants being offered on the continent that are of dubious origin. I have an increasing number of young plants I am growing on. Some customers have expressed an interest in trying to grow them. They are best kept in little colonies so I will be offering pots planted with 5 or 10 seedlings. Anyone interested should give me a call. I have a quantity if large dactylorhizas arriving shortly. I understand these have been in the pots for some time and have a number of divisions in each pot. I will list them when they arrive. I have recently obtained some Australian Thelymitra terrestrial orchids, more commonly known as Sun Orchids as the flowers open only when the sun is shining. The species offered are classified as easy. They grow through the winter and flower in the late spring. The most impressive are the 80 cm tall multi-flowered blue species and hybrids. There is a limited amount of information about growing them in the UK but they will take frost but I think temperatures from zero to 10 deg C are more suitable for the period November to February. They need to be kept dry through the summer and then require early autumn rains and cool nights to initiate growth. There are a number of colours available but the blue specie and hybrids are very popular. Again, these can only be collected at Garstang or from one of the events I am attending. I will shortly be putting the list of shows I will be attending next year and clubs where I will be talking about growing terrestrials successfully. I will be at the 2nd International Orchid Show in Peterborough and the RHS London Orchid Show for the first time amongst many venues. I am trying to attend something in every area of the country at least once in the year. Talks include the Suffolk and Cornwall Orchid Societies. I apologise to all those people who email me from the USA that I am unable to send any orchids to them. This is because of the requirements for Phyto-sanitary and CITES certificate for all International sales outside the EU and I am not prepared to send plants without the correct documentation. I am currently in discussions with an American nursery to see if European species can be shipped in to him. During the summer and early autumn I had major problems with my computer and answerphone. This resulted in my losing all stored emails and my email address book and a number of phone messages. If you did not receive an answer to an enquiry or were expecting a response regarding early summer discussions please contact me again. More recently AOL has decided that many emails coming in are spam when they are not. I have now realized this and corrected the situation. However, I may have lost some emails. I want to add more photographs of orchids either growing in gardens or in pots. I would be pleased to use photographs of customers terrestrial orchids. No indication of the owner will be given only cultural information and a general geographical location. Summer Dormant Tuber List
